NERC disturbance reports highlight risks stemming from deficiencies across IBR performance requirements, modeling, and conformance assessment procedures. Gaps in each of these areas contribute to systemic performance risks for the industry, requiring action of MISO and stakeholders to mitigate reliability risks. MISO's 2024 Attributes work demonstrated that grid forming controls significantly improve voltage stability limits, with advanced IBR controls (i.e. grid forming) showing promise to provide the grid support services currently supplied by synchronous machines, if properly designed and configured, but the adoption of these capabilities requires industry action.
