An Independent Market Monitor (IMM) impartially implements Market Monitoring and Mitigation (MMM) business practices. The IMM reports directly to the MISO Board of Directors and monitors activities of market participants and Local Balancing Authorities without interference from MISO or state regulatory agencies. Currently, MISO retains Potomac Economics Ltd. as its IMM. 

As the IMM to MISO, Potomac Economics continuously receives data that it uses to evaluate the performance of the markets and identify conduct by market participants or MISO that may compromise the efficiency or distort the outcomes of the markets. In addition to real-time monitoring, Potomac Economics produces reports assessing the competitive performance of the markets. These reports are produced on both a seasonal and annual basis. Ad-hoc reports are produced to evaluate specific market issues as needed.
