CARMEL, Ind. — The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is coordinating with member utilities and neighboring RTOs to review storm plans as Winter Storm Landon moves across the central U.S. MISO Operations declared Conservative Operations and issued a Severe Weather Alert beginning today at 1pm ET until further notice.

“Our priority, as always, is to maintain safe, reliable grid operations,” said Daryl Brown, executive director – MISO South Region. “As the storm moves in, we are focused on coordinating our plans with our members and ensuring consistent situational awareness during this event.”

MISO projects adequate resources ahead of the storm with enough generation available to meet the forecasted demand. However, predicted ice accumulations, particularly in Arkansas late Wednesday and into Thursday, create the potential for entering abnormal or emergency operations.

“Our team trains to respond to the quickly changing needs during extreme weather events,” said Jessica Lucas, senior director – Reliability Coordination at MISO. “We have integrated lessons learned from previous winter events to anticipate operational needs and identify solutions as quickly as possible.”

MISO Operating Procedures provide details on the alerts, advisories or declarations that MISO may issue during Emergency Operations. The MISO Media Center includes background information on how MISO prepares for extreme weather conditions.
