Long Range Transmission Planning

Long Range Transmission Planning (LRTP) is a key initiative of the Reliability Imperative. The focus of LRTP is to improve the ability to move electricity across the MISO region from where it is generated to where it is needed -- reliably and at the lowest possible cost.

In July of 2022, MISO's Board of Directors unanimously approved $10.3 billion in new transmission projects. This LRTP Tranche 1 Portfolio is the first of four tranches of transmission solutions developed to provide reliable and economic energy delivery to address future reliability needs.

Additional information around this portfolio can be found on the Multi-Value Projects (MVPs) page.

LRTP Tranche 2 addresses transmission in the Midwest region. Tranche 2 commenced during the fourth quarter of 2022 and is expected to be finalized with MISO Board of Directors’ approval in 2024.

On March 4, 2024, MISO released an initial, draft proposal for a set of Tranche 2 transmission solutions.

MISO will include a stakeholder review process leading up to the MISO Board of Directors’ approval of the Tranche 2 portfolio, following the same process used for annual MISO Transmission Expansion Plan (MTEP) approvals.

For the latest information on Tranche 2 please read our LRTP Tranche 2 FAQ and LRTP Workshop meeting materials.

Cost Allocation discussions are underway for the LRTP Tranche 3 effort and stakeholder engagement can be found at the Regional Expansion Criteria and Benefits Working Group (RECBWG).  Transmission planning will commence when appropriate as the Tranche 2 effort nears the end of its cycle.  Tranche 3 will focus on the South region of MISO. Further information will be provided at a later date.

LRTP Tranche 4 will address the North/South interface limit. Further information will be provided at a later date.
